The sand that can be used in a sandblaster comes in many grades, which differ in thickness and abrasiveness. Sand should be picked according to how much work needs to be done and how damaged the aluminum is. Sandblasting aluminum with fine sand is best for small imperfections, while medium is better for larger imperfections.

Thanks for the input guys. I know the risks of grinding aluminum that is why I was looking for alternative methods. It sounds like sandpaper type material in a variety of format i.e. belts, flap wheels, and sheets is the way to go with aluminum. I have an angle grinder so the trick now will be to find a higher finer grit flap wheel for it.

Give the aluminum a final sanding with 3000grit sandpaper. Switch to 3000grit sandpaper and go back over the entire surface you have been sanding. This will make the aluminum very shiny. If you dont want a supershiny, mirrorlike finish, you can use sandpaper that is slightly less than 3000grit to finish sanding.

Sand the surface of the aluminum. Use a cloth to rub off excess dust and dirt. Apply selfetching primer in multiple coats. Apply spray paint color of choice in multiple layers. Allow spray paint to cure for at least 24 hours. OPTIONAL: Apply a clear coat to seal and protect your item.
